Lillian Lowery
State Superintendent of Schools
Maryland State Department of Education

Pre-Academy Role: Cluster Director, Fairfax Public Schools, Va.
Post-Academy Role: Superintendent, Christina School District, Del.

I grew up in the Southeast, a child of poverty and a product of public schools. My teachers helped shape my lifelong belief that every child should be inspired to dream and given the tools to make those dreams a reality. It is our job to provide them with the strong foundation upon which to build that future.

Dr. Lillian Lowery is Maryland's state superintendent of schools and secretary-treasurer of the state board of education. She came to Maryland from Delaware, where she served as both state secretary of education and superintendent of the state's largest school district. Lowery has also served as an area assistant superintendent in Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia and an area administrator in Fort Wayne Community Schools in Indiana.

Before moving into district-level administration, Lowery spent 14 years at Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Va., as an English teacher, assistant principal, minority student achievement monitor and principal. Under her leadership, the school made dramatic improvements in overall student achievement and narrowing achievement gaps.

A lifelong educator, Lowery began her career as a middle school English teacher in Gastonia, North Carolina.
